The Royal Society’s report A New Approach to Mathematical and Data Education argues that the UK must urgently reform how mathematics is taught to meet the demands of a fast-changing, data-driven world. It proposes shifting from a narrow focus on traditional maths to a broader “Mathematical and Data Education” (MDE) that blends mathematics, statistics, data science, and computational tools. The report emphasizes three core strands: foundational and advanced mathematics, general quantitative literacy for everyday problem-solving, and domain-specific competences for work and study. It highlights weaknesses in current systems—such as declining student engagement, large attainment gaps, outdated assessments, and a shortage of qualified teachers—and calls for a long-term, 10–15 year plan of curriculum reform, new qualification pathways, investment in teacher professionalism, and integration of technology and AI in learning. The overall goal is to create a mathematically and data-literate society where all citizens can participate confidently in civic life, adapt to new jobs, and contribute to innovation and economic growth
