OpenAI’s research on 1.5 million conversations highlights how people are integrating ChatGPT into daily life and work. The platform now serves over 700 million weekly active users, with especially rapid growth in low- and middle-income countries and a more balanced gender split than in earlier years. Usage falls into three main categories: asking (information and advice), doing (writing, planning, coding, task support), and expressing (creative and reflective exploration). Writing is the most common professional use, while decision support and judgment tasks are rising in knowledge-intensive fields. About 30% of usage is work-related, while 70% is for personal and non-work tasks. Importantly, users tend to expand their use cases over time, showing that the tool evolves from simple queries into a broader productivity and learning companion as familiarity and model capabilities grow.
