OpenAI is funding Critterz, an animated film budgeted at under $30 million. The film aims to be made three times faster and cheaper than typical Hollywood animated features. It uses AI tools (for image generation, design, etc.) alongside traditional filmmaking elements like human voice actors and artists. The goal is to complete production in about nine months, instead of the usual three years. If successful, the project could reshape how animated films are made and open doors for smaller creators by lowering barriers to entry. There are risks though: copyright, guilds’ concerns, audience reception, and securing distribution.
