Summery:

Since summer 2023, ChatGPT use among U.S. adults has nearly doubled, rising to 34% by early 2025. Young adults lead in usage: 58% of those under 30 say they have used it, compared with much lower rates in older age groups.

ChatGPT is being used more for work, learning, and entertainment. Among employed adults, 28% now use it for work. For learning new things, 26% overall report usage; for entertainment, 22%.

Education plays a major role: people with bachelor’s or postgraduate degrees use ChatGPT far more often than those with a high school diploma or less.

Awareness of ChatGPT is very high: 79% of U.S. adults have heard at least a little about it. About 34% say they’ve heard a lot. Younger people and more educated adults are especially likely to be highly aware.

Many U.S. adults still haven’t used ChatGPT (66%). A subset (20%) have heard nothing about it.
